What is Geo-content?
Local governments are organized into distinct departments, such as Elections, Assessment and Records Management, that typically operate independently from each other, despite being highly reliant on each other for their daily operations. Most departments operate using a software system that is built specifically to their needs, thus creating a silo effect and a challenging communication environment. This often results in information inconsistencies and delays on processes that require inter-departmental collaboration (such as permitting).
The emergence of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has given local governments a new way to view and organize data through parcels of land tied to specific addresses. GIS has evolved from its start as a basic mapping and organizational tool to a major potential resource for integrating information between departments, analyzing data, and improving overall productivity and collaboration. Traditionally, this type of higher-level GIS application had to be built from scratch by custom developers, often resulting in a costly and time-consuming development process.
